Surly Midnight Special | A Very Special Custom Build
Sometimes we just like to have fun
The brief
This was simply done as a fun project for ourselves. We love Surly and wanted to create a flatbar Midnight Special that was unlike anything you could buy off the shelf.
The bike
This Midnight (Very) Special was designed to be a showpiece for what we can achieve in our custom builds, but without going crazy on the budget.
The idea was to create a classic look, so we used as many polished silver components as possible, such as the Soma Shotwell stem. (They just look great, as does the paint on this beauty.)
A mixture of components was used to create a budget-friendly 1x12 drive train with a huge gear range.
Stopping duties are taken care of with a set of Shimano hydraulic brakes, which are well-priced and super-reliable.
For wheels, we laced Novatec sealed bearing hubs to Alex tubeless-ready rims, with a set of Donnelly street tyres to finish them off nicely.
We even managed to find some grips to match the frame colour. It's the little touches that make our custom builds truly special... Midnight Special!
