Surly Ogre | Alex's Custom Build

An Ogre built from the ground up

Home / Build Gallery / Alex's Surly Ogre

The brief

Alex wanted an off-road tourer that could also be used as a daily commuter and general mountain bike. He has some very steep hills in his area, so gearing (low gearing specifically) was a primary concern.

The bike

We started with a burly Surly Ogre steel frame. After a couple of discussions about the build list, we decided on a Shimano Deore 3x10 gear system as it offers an absolutely massive gear range, giving Alex a low enough gear to get him up pretty much anything.

We chose Shimano mechanical brakes because Alex will be taking his bike on overseas tours and was concerned about kinking hydraulic hoses in transit.

With touring in mind, we wanted to give Alex the greatest carrying capacity possible so that meant a set of Surly Nice Racks — you can attach crazy amounts of gear to these guys!

A super-tough wheelset was required, so we laced up a set of DT Swiss hubs and Alex rims, topped off with a set of Schwalbe Hurricane tyres.

We picked Easton handlebars and stem plus a BBB seat post as these components offer great quality and value for money. A set of SQLab 710 grips gave Alex an ergonomic hand position and maximum vibration damping.

For the final touch, a very comfy Ergon saddle.

This Ogre is ready to go anywhere!

What You Say

I have ridden a few miles now since my first extensive bike service with BMCR. This was not a cheap bike service, however it was exactly what I was looking for. No band-aid fixes here. What is offered is an excellent ‘value for money’ complete bike service. I often ride early morning in the dark…Richard Wilson
