Michael's Bossi Grit SX

Stylish, practical, flexible & a hint of orange zest

Home / Custom Builds / Michael's Bossi Grit SX

The brief

Michael was looking to retire his old road bike. He didn't want to just purchase another roadie, however -- the call of gravel had become too strong, so he needed a new bike which would give him greater flexibility.

What could we create that would work just as well on the road as on gravel? The answer was obvious: a Bossi Grit SX.

The bike

One of the first questions we have to ask with a custom build is whether we go 1X or 2X. While the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference, a 1X setup (a single chainring on the front) has larger jumps between gears than a 2X setup. These larger jumps aren't a problem on gravel, but can be a bit annoying on the road. As Michael would be using the bike on road as well as off, the 2X option was the better way to go.

For the groupset, Michael's preference was Shimano so we went with the clean lines and excellent performance of GRX Di2. (As we always say, if you can go electronic, do it.)

Taking advantage of the Grit's ability to run 700c as well as 27.5" wheels, we opted for Bossi road wheelset with Schwalbe One tyres as well as a Bossi gravel wheelset with Teravail Rutland tyres. No more faffing about transferring tyres and sealant between wheels -- all Michael has to do is swap the wheels over to suit that day's terrain and he's ready to go. (And they look awesome, too -- swipe through the photos to see both setups.)

For the contact points, an SQLab 611 Active saddle gives Michael excellent sitbone support and comfort, no matter how long he's riding for. Easton's EC70 SL carbon superlight handlebars are great for shock absorption and comfort, and the shallow drops suit Michael's riding style well, so they were a logical choice, too.

We finished this beauty off with a burst of citrus: Ciclovation handlebar tape in Sunburst Orange, orange Garbaruk jockey wheels plus a matching top cap and lock ring, orange Hope headset spacers and seat clamp, and some hand-painted frame detailing. Orange you glad we did? #dadjoke

Comfortable, versatile, durable and beautiful -- this Bossi is truly a forever bike.
