8 Easy Steps Towards Ruining Your Bike! |
 |
As a mechanically-minded shop, we're often being asked what people can do to make their bikes run better. (Facetious answer: bring them to us. Let us make them good.) However, people don't seem to ask what they should do to completely stuff their bikes up. So we're going to tell you. Behold our wisdom!
1. If your forks feel a bit stiff, why not use silicone spray on the stanchions? Sure, it'll eat the seals and damage the internals, but a quick fix is better than nothing, right?
2. Cleaning bikes is for uptight losers with too much time on their hands. You don't care that caked-on grime and dirt is going to chew through your groupset in record time; you can dry your eyes with thousand-dollar bills and go and buy some more stuff.
3. Don't bother lubing the chain. Ever. That sound it makes when it's rusted up completely and you're drowning out the traffic on the way to work? Music to your fellow commuters' ears.
4. Never pump up your tyres. The more pot-holes you hit, the more "customised" your rim becomes. Also, if it's harder to pedal, you burn more calories.
5. Do you hear a rattle, creak, groan, or odd noise? The solution is simple: turn up your iPod. If you ignore it, it will go away by itself eventually.
6. If, however, you want to be proactive and the squealing of your brakes is driving you nuts, just spray the rotors with WD40. No more friction = no more noise!
7. Gears acting up? You have two choices: a) leave it until you can't change any gears whatsoever, then dump your bike in a heap in front of us and say, "Fix it!", or b) fiddle with the derailleur screws until you can't change any gears whatsoever, then dump your bike in a heap in front of us and say, "Fix it!" while denying that you fiddled with it.
8. Have a spectacular stack and spill life-giving fluids all over your bike? You don't need to clean that stuff off before you take your (almost) deadly treadly in to get fixed. We love handling dried blood!*
* OK, it's not going to ruin your bike, but, seriously, it grosses us out. Don't make us implement an 'Eeeugh!' Tax to add to your bill, people. | |

Dear Subscriber,
We're the birthday, we're the birthday, we're the birthday boy and girl... Yes, BMCR is turning 4 this month! (November 22nd to be exact, which incidentally was the same day that the tomb of Tutankhamun was opened in 1922. And look how that turned out.*) Anyway, huge, huge thanks to y'all as we wouldn't be here without you. *sniffle* Or, for our younger readers, mad props to our peeps, fo'shizzle. Word up.
All right, enough of that. Read on for some super birthday specials! If only we had some cake to go with them... Preferably chocolate... Anyone? Anyone?
*crickets chirping*
Well, fine.
* Also the same day that Kennedy was assassinated in '63. Numerologists beware! |

Choose your shoes! |
A good bike shoe is comfy. A really good bike shoe is comfy and helps with pedalling efficiency. A really, really good bike shoe is comfy, helps with pedalling efficiency, and comes with a discount! Well, hold on to your helmets, readers, as this month we're taking 15% off all Shimano shoes in stock. "Eee!" we hear you say. Too right.
For dirt-busters, the SH-M225S is an elite level racing shoe with a carbon-fibre reinforced sole. Moulded and comfortable, the buckle and Velcro straps allow for micro- adjustments, and it also includes replaceable toe spikes. For those who take their off-roading more casually, the SH-MT41G has a recessed cleat design for easy walking, straps and laces to keep your foot firm, and a design that doesn't scream, "Look at me! I'm a cyclist!" (Some prefer to whisper.)
Roadies don't miss out, either, with three models to choose from. (There is a catch, however. Read on.) Anatomically curved for a perfect fit, each model includes mesh inserts for ventilation as well as off-set Velcro straps to avoid pressure points . You can get 15% off the fibreglass-soled SH-RO85, or, if you'd like a whopping 30% off the price, choose between the carbon-fibre-soled SH-R151L and fibreglass-soled SH-R074S. The catch? We only have one pair each of the SH-R151L and SH-R074S shoes, sizes 43.5 and 43 respectively. Riders, pumps at the ready...and...fight!
[Disclaimer: BMCR does not advocate the use of force in obtaining limited stock. But we can be bribed with food.] |

I like to ride my Commençal..* |
If your XC bike hasn't broken in half but you're looking for an excuse to buy another one, how about this? You can now get 15% off selected 08 Commençal bikes! Oui, oui! French style, finesse, and world-class suspension can be yours for a bargain.
Choose between the Meta 4.2 for $3230 (save over $550!) and the Meta 55.2 for $3400 (save $600!). We've got just two of each model left, so you'd better hurry. (Case in point: we were also going to offer the Meta 4.1 but it was sold as I was typing this.) Check out the full specs on the Commençal website by clicking Bicycles and 08 Range. C'est magnifique!
*OK, this offer technically isn't a subscriber-only special but we thought we'd let you know anyway. |

It's easy to be green |
The birthday fairy is not yet tapped; there's one more special up her sparkly and voluminous sleeve! Do the people at Cibo laugh at your saggy, baggy knicks? Are you finding that ochre clashes with your skin tone? Then take the opportunity to come to the dark side with 20% off all BMCR clothing. (And, let me tell you, this is a super-special: the clothing is pretty much priced at cost to start with.)
We've got bits for everybody and every body: windbreakers, vests, short- and long-sleeved jerseys, DH jerseys, and knicks galore. So show your dedicated Bio-Mechanics some love, save a bunch of money, and you too could look as deliriously happy as Mr. Rochford, pictured left.
(Tim: "Could I not be in the next e.newsletter, just for a change?"
Us: "No.") |
|
Once again, many thanks to all of you for your support over the past 4 years. In return for letting us keep your bicycles sweetly humming, we promise not to become a monolithic franchise. :-)
Keep riding, and stay safe.
Cheers!
