Jayne Rutter
In addition to her 2005/2006/2007 SA DH State Champion and 2006 XC SA State Champion titles (among others), Jayne has just become the QLD DH State Champion! She took time out from polishing her trophies to say 'hello' to y'all.
Disciplines:
DH and XC. But I have been known to do the occasional road race, crit or hill climb.
Currently riding:
Commençal Mini DH* (yeow!), Scott Scale 20, Scott Spark 20, Giant TRC 1, and Mongoose Supergoose.
Favourite loop: My favourites change all the time, but I really enjoyed the Coffs Harbor DH track and the XC loops around Mt Cootha.
Weekly training schedule:
Nothing at the moment [editor's note: Jayne broke her wrist last week. Boo!]
I like my training to have a lot of variety, so I mix it up with XC, DH, BMX or dirt jumps, weights and also road riding.
Pre-race snack:
XC - usually a vegemite roll or banana. DH - Coke & chocolate.
Odd race rituals: I fidget a lot. Everything must be perfectly in place. Tony [Jayne's husband] cant touch anything. ANYTHING. Most painful crash:
I clipped a tree in the rock garden at Eagle Park state champs and knackered myself and turned my bits black and blue. This was the most painful at the time of the crash. Most painful post-crash was breaking my wrist in Tassie, and just last week breaking my other wrist in Canberra.
Essential bike accessory:
Cool riding socks and Yeti grips. Most useful riding tip you've ever received:
From Janna (Marsh - SA XC diva): ride your own race. Don't get concerned with other racers and what they are up to, just focus on your own race and do your best.
Most useless riding tip you've ever received:
'Don't break anything.' This tip doesn't seem to work.
Tips for aspiring female DHillers?
Have fun and don't get pushed into doing anything you don't want to do. Everyone improves at their own pace, and there is no point hurting yourself and your confidence riding something when you aren't ready. But don't be afraid to try new things; just take your time!
Do you have a motto? Always have fun! Finally: tubes or tubeless?
Much to Bio-Pete's disgust, I use tubes. I seem to destroy tubeless.
Thanks, Jayne!

Dear Subscriber,
I was so happy to see the first caterpillar of the season on the weekend, I almost kissed it before throwing it over the fence into our neighbour's yard. Then I realised it was only August. *sigh* One more month of winter to go. On the plus side, we've got some lovely new products for you as well as a few specials to keep you warm until the thermometer rises and we can all go back to complaining about how hot it is. Or is that just me? (e.news readers: "It's just you. Get on with it.") |

New to BMCR |
If you're not quite ready to commit to clip-in pedals (that old 'pedalling efficiency vs. aaaaaaaiiieee my feet are stuck!' argument) but still want a good grippy pedal, the Sunline V-2s are the way to go. Featuring traction grooves and replaceable screw pins, these babies also sport sealed bearings, a concave body, and a large cromoly spindle. Because tiny spindles are a disaster waiting to happen.
There are times when trying to peel an orange doesn't work, and being on a bike is one of them. Available in gel, powder, and the new bar form, High5 Energy products will keep you moving whether you're racing or just on a long ride. Don't believe us? Well, Sports Dietitians Australia says High5 presents highly concentrated carbohydrates for instant energy! (Don't ask us what the '5' stands for, though.)
We've had the oddly named Dooback, then the less-oddly named Spy, and now the Zefal Spin mirror will help keep you alert to what's sneaking up behind you, be it a bus, wayward taxi, or that guy with the fluoro shorts who always overtakes you on the way to work. Suitable for road or MTB bikes, the Spin is fully retractable, comes with a universal bar end fitting, and, as the name suggests, can rotate to any angle which suits you. Keep an eye out for stealth cars (or possibly do your own surgery) with this nifty little thing! |

Syncros for cheep |
|
Dreaming of some fancy new handlebars? You're in luck! We've got three pairs of beautiful Syncros handlebars at prices so low you may suspect we've been LUIing*.
Feast your eyes on the beauty of the carbon CFs (below; aren't they lovely?), the crazy lightness of the 7075 low-risers, and the tree-flattening extra width of the low-rise 2014s. I'd go on about their individually customised sweep angles and custom drawing and butting but you'd probably be more interested in the fact that they're going for less than half of their usual price. Better hurry, though; we've only got three pairs!

Spotlight on: Superflash! |
When you're riding at night-time, you don't want a light which says, "Um, I'm not in your way am I? I'll just ride in the gutter..Don't mind me...Oops! Ow! I'm sorry, was that my elbow getting in the way of your side mirror?" No! You want a light that says, "Here I am! Sleek! Speedy! With glutes you could bounce a coin off! FEAR ME!" Ladies and gentlemen, the Superflash is that light.
Visible from over 1.5 kilometres away, it's weatherproof and can be mounted to your seatpost or seatstay. Or you can festoon your backpack with a bunch of them and attempt to blind people. If you're not in the mood for its unique flash pattern (did we mention it's visible from over 1.5 kms away?), you can also run it in steady mode. We promise not to call you 'boring'.
Now also available in a front version, come in and check it out! In fact, we're so happy about it, we'll even offer you 10% off for August*. Just don't hold it directly in front of your eyes. Trust us on that one.
* Offer only applies to single lights. (The combo packs already discounted, peeps!) |

Cover your ears, children! |
Yes, literally. Take advantage of the still-wintry conditions by getting 10% off all our winter clothing until the end of August!
To keep your sticking-out-bits toasty, we've got fleecy-lined Shimano Accu-3D and BBB arm and leg warmers as well as Shimano toe covers and BBB shoe booties. We're also offering one of my personal favourites: the Sportful ear warmers. Your ears don't know what they're missing!
If you're thinking more of the torso area, what about the deluxe and de-lovely Peloton 1 Splash rainjackets? They're windproof, waterproof, and have a micro-fleece collar and reflective strips. In addition, they're very well-ventilated, so you won't arrive at work drowning in sweat, which can happen with some other rain jackets. In the absence of Cadel winning the TDF, let BMCR's winter clothing special keep you warm! | |
|
That's it for now. Hope you're all managing to get out on two wheels in between showers.
As a side note, remember that mud is the enemy of your groupset! If you need a refresher on Pete's Chain-Cleaning 101 lesson, just drop us a line. :-)
Cheers and happy trails,
